Fasten seat belts behind your back – A deadly danger

Oct 05, 2018

Fastening the seat belts behind your back is a deadly hazard if an accident occurs.

Many drivers now wear the seat belt behind their back as a means of dealing with checks of traffic police, keeping them free from being restrained by the seatbelt, or keeping the car from giving the warning sound. The seatbelt fastener is clicked but the driver is not actually wearing it. However, this action unintentionally becomes a deadly hazard if an accident occurs.

We are now familiar with the traumatic accidents involving the wrong wearing of a seatbelt, in which there is a car crash and all airbags are deployed, but the driver is still injured to death. From observing the scene of the driving seat, it is possible that the seat belt was buckled behind the driver's back, which did not protect the victim from the collision.

Wearing seat belt behind your back – a deadly danger

It is known that many drivers are wearing safety belts behind their back to bypass traffic police and, at the same time, as a measure to avoid the feeling of entanglement.

However, this action could accidentally turn into a deadly hazard because, as the force of airbag inflation is very strong, the seat belt is to keep people in the car in position with good posture, which can prevent the driver from hitting his/her body on the steering wheel, windscreen and other objects if an accident occurs.

Therefore, if the seat belt is not worn, the occupants of the vehicle will face the risk of injury from the airbag when it suddenly bursts at a lightning speed with a strong explosive force (less than 1 second with speed up to 300km/h).

Embrace Life - always wear your seat belt

Today, on many car models, airbags are designed in independent or dependent forms. Independence means that, without the driver wearing seat belts, airbags are still deployable. Dependence means that airbags will only inflate if seat belts are buckled.

However, whether they are independent or dependent, airbags and safety belts are still two passive safety systems that complement each other effectively to ensure the safety of the occupant.

In the collision sufficient to detonate airbags, seat belts play a very important role, in coordination with the airbag system, to protect the safety of passengers. Therefore, Filipino drivers are advised to always wear a seatbelt as it is designed when they sit behind the wheel.

The seatbelt must go across the shoulder and down to the hip. You will get a ticket if you're caught not wearing the seatbelt properly.
