Follow us to explore the remarkable advantages and disadvantages of the electronic parking brake system.

Electronic parking brake (Electronic Handbrake) is more and more employed in many car models to mitigate the risk and prevent accidental damage compared to a conventional handbrake. Follow us to explore the remarkable advantages of the electronic parking brake system.

Electronic parking brake on the car is an intelligent automatic handbrake system aiming at reducing the possibility of drivers forgetting to pull or release the handbrake and ensuring the safety of both people and vehicles. The electronic parking brake is often equipped on luxury car lines. It is a small button with the letter P being printed inside a circle, near the gear stick or on the dashboard. Most Mercedes cars have a pedal-type electronic parking brake located on the left side of the driver's foot.

1. Superior features of the electronic parking brake

  • Only when simultaneously apply the brake pedal and press the button is the electronic handbrake released (i.e., Unlock). This helps the car not slip down when the driver releases the electronic handbrake but forgets to apply the brake pedal.
  • When the car is parked, the gear is set at position P. At this point, the electronic parking brake automatically switches to Lock mode when the machine is off. This action will prevent the risk of driver forgetting to pull the handbrake.
  • If the driver forgets to release the electronic parking brake but applies the gas pedal, the electronic parking brake will automatically unlock to avoid brake locking and burning. It also protects the engine and the transmission from being damaged.

2. Electronic parking brake and conventional handbrake: Advantages and disadvantages

2.1. Conventional handbrake

  • Occupy a lot of space in the cockpit
  • Drivers are likely to forget to release the handbrake when starting the vehicle or release incompletely (see on the dashboard)
  • Must be serviced periodically, otherwise, the brake will be jammed or locked up
  • Handling becomes more complicated if you want to start on a hill

Conventional handbrakes

Conventional handbrakes usually occupy more space in the cockpit

2.2. Electronic handbrake

  • The electronic parking brake is neater, making the cockpit more comfortable and spacious
  • There are many more advantages compared to the conventional handbrake (described above).
  • The operation will be simpler when you start on a hill
  • Observe the handbrake effect right on the button
